A considerable elevation gain through lush rainforest on day one, where rain showers are common — the first milestone on Kilimanjaro's steepest and most direct route.
Dense rainforest gives way to open moorland, with occasional views of Mount Meru on clear days. Barranco Camp sits where the Umbwe trail meets the Lemosho and Machame trails — a good afternoon to rest and acclimatize.
Climb the famous Barranco Wall (about an hour, easier than it looks) followed by a more demanding hike across the hilly Karanga Valley, with a short acclimatization side-trip toward Barafu before returning to camp.
Your base camp for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft) — camp is set up in advance, leaving the remaining daylight for rest before summit night.
