A considerable elevation gain through lush rainforest on day one, where rain showers are common — the first milestone on Kilimanjaro's steepest and most direct route.

Umbwe Camp to Barranco CampBarranco Valley · 3,900m/12,792ft

Dense rainforest gives way to open moorland, with occasional views of Mount Meru on clear days. Barranco Camp sits where the Umbwe trail meets the Lemosho and Machame trails — a good afternoon to rest and acclimatize.

Climb the famous Barranco Wall (about an hour, easier than it looks) followed by a more demanding hike across the hilly Karanga Valley, with a short acclimatization side-trip toward Barafu before returning to camp.
