Gorilla Trekking

A guided trek through Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park for an hour face-to-face with a wild mountain gorilla family.

🌍 Uganda · Rwanda
📋 Fully Tailor-Made

Mountain gorilla trekking is one of Africa's most sought-after wildlife experiences — a guided walk through dense montane forest that ends with a strictly-limited hour beside a habituated gorilla family. We run treks out of Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, and tailor the rest of your itinerary — safari days, Zanzibar time, or a Kilimanjaro climb — around your trekking date.

What to Expect

  • A ranger-led trek that can run anywhere from 30 minutes to 6+ hours round trip, depending on where the gorilla family is that day
  • A strictly enforced one hour with the gorillas once your group finds them, at a respectful distance
  • Groups capped at 8 trekkers per gorilla family per day, set by the park authority to limit disturbance
  • A minimum age of 15 to trek, and a reasonable level of fitness for uneven, sometimes steep forest terrain
  • Permits booked 3–6 months in advance through us — availability is limited and sells out in peak months (June–September, December–February)

Who This Style Suits

Great Fit
  • Travellers who want one extraordinary wildlife encounter, not just more game drives
  • Couples, small groups, or solo travellers comfortable with a few hours of forest walking
  • Anyone combining Uganda or Rwanda with a Tanzania or Kenya safari in one trip
Consider a Different Style If
  • You have mobility limitations that make uneven forest terrain difficult — talk to us about accessible alternatives
  • Budget is the primary concern — permit costs alone start at $600–800pp and are non-negotiable park fees
  • You'd rather keep the whole trip to open-plains game drives — our classic safari styles may suit better
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What travellers usually ask before booking this style.

How much does a gorilla trekking permit cost?

In Uganda, standard permits are $800 per person (foreign non-resident), dropping to around $600 during the April, May and November low season — though low-season permits can't be rescheduled once paid. In Rwanda, the standard permit is $1,500 per person. Prices are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Development Board and are reviewed periodically, so we always confirm the current rate when we quote your trip.

How many people are in a trekking group?

A maximum of 8 trekkers are permitted per gorilla family per day — this limit is set by the park authorities specifically to minimize stress on the gorillas, not by us.

How fit do I need to be?

You don't need to be an athlete, but the terrain is genuinely uneven forest — some treks are a short, easy walk, others involve a few hours of climbing through undergrowth. Porters are available to carry your bag and help on steeper sections, and we'll match your trek difficulty to your fitness level where the park allows it.

Can I combine gorilla trekking with a safari?

Yes — it's one of our most popular combinations. Many travellers pair a Bwindi or Volcanoes trek with a Serengeti, Ngorongoro or Maasai Mara safari, or a Zanzibar beach extension. We'll sequence the logistics (flights and border transfers included) so nothing feels rushed.
