The defining feature of the Machame route.
Certified lead guide, assistant guides, cook and porters — fully insured and daily health-checked.
Four-season tents, a private dining tent, and freshly prepared meals throughout the trek.
Presented at the finishing gate on your descent.
The trek starts through Machame village on the lower slopes, then climbs through lush rainforest up a ridge to Machame Camp. Lower sections can be muddy — gaiters and trekking poles recommended.
A steep initial climb gains altitude quickly, passing lava tubes and glacial valleys en route to Shira Camp, with a picnic lunch along the way.
A "walk high, sleep low" acclimatization day into the alpine desert, with the option to detour up to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp — a long but genuinely beneficial day for acclimatization.
A shorter, dedicated acclimatization day — climbing the Barranco Wall before reaching Karanga Camp, giving the body extra time to adjust before continuing higher (this is the extra rest day that makes this the recommended 7-day version of Machame).
Continue to the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail before reaching Barafu Hut, completing the South Circuit with spectacular views of both Mawenzi and Kibo. Camp, rest, and prepare for the summit push.
Depart between midnight and 2am, climbing scree toward Stella Point (18,600ft) for sunrise, then on to Uhuru Peak — the highest point on Kilimanjaro — before descending all the way to Mweka Camp with a lunch stop at Barafu.
A final descent to Mweka Gate for your summit certificate, with a further hour on to Mweka Village where your vehicle transfers you back to your hotel in Arusha.
