Registration and Transfer to Rongai Gate, to 1st Caves Camp1,950m → 2,600m · 8km, ~5 hrs

Register with Tanzania National Parks at Marangu Gate, then drive roughly 2.5 hours to the Rongai trailhead (with a lunch stop en route), arriving at 1st Caves Camp in the late afternoon or early evening.

The climb continues past Second Cave (3,450m, a good lunch spot) to Kikelewa Cave — an exposed camp where night temperatures can drop below freezing.

A short but steep ascent to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, rewarded with dramatic views and a hot dinner as you watch the sunset.
