The ‘Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route – 5 Days Hiking Tour’ is a trekking multi-day tour to the Kilimanjaro summit through the Marangu Route. It’s a popular and easy route to the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro given its gradual slope and direct path. It is that path that you will surely reach the highest point in Africa.
Allocated in a small group you will have an adventurous journey to the roof of Africa. However, the short time frame of the route makes altitude acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast.
Marangu Route is unfortunately less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason. At the same time, it is the best option to conquer Kilimanjaro for less experienced hikers, but with no illusions, even this easiest way up to the Kilimanjaro summit will require a fairly good physical condition.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)or Arusha Airport, where you will meet with our representative who will drive you to your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi. The accommodation will provide all the essentials for a comfortable stay: rooms, hot water, polite staff, and Internet access.
Elevation: 1860m/6100ft to 2700m/8875ft
Distance: 8km/5mi
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast and orientation, travel (approximately an hour) to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, register and start the climb. To reach the Mandara camp, walk through the rainforest. It is a good idea to take a side excursion to Maundi Crater to visit the area, which includes Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Look for Colobus monkeys, soaring Eucalyptus trees, and other wildlife in the rainforest.
Elevation: 2700m/8875ft to 3700m/12,200ft
Distance: 12km/7.5mi
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Heathland
You depart from the glades of the rainforest and travel up a trail through the wide moorlands until you reach the Horombo camp. Amazing views can be seen from the top of Kibo and Mawenzi. Look for enormous groundsels and giant lobelias. The effects of the altitude can start to affect you.
Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 4700m/15,500ft
Distance: 9km/5.5mi
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
As we continue to climb, we pass the last watering hole and make our way up to the saddle that separates Kibo and Mawenzi peaks on Kilimanjaro. Upper heathland has the most vegetation, which disappears into the “moonscape” after that. Dinner, rest, and summit climb preparation follow shortly afterward.
Elevation: 4700m/15,500ft to 5895m/19,340ft
Down to 3700m/12,200ft
Distance: 6km/4mi up / 15km/9mi down
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up / 15km/9mi down
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Start your ascent to the summit very early in the morning (between midnight and two in the morning) by making your way up to Gilman’s point, which is on the crater rim. Ascending further, we now reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest peak. Every turn reveals breathtaking views. Take a photo of yourself at the summit to show your loved ones. From there, we descend to Kibo, where we have lunch and take a break before moving on to the Horombo camp.
Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 1700m/5500ft
Distance: 20km/12.5mi
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Forest
After breakfast, we make our way through the moorland on a slow descent to the Mandara Hut. Follow the trail that descends through the lush woodland until you reach the Marangu National Park gate. It could be muddy and damp at lower altitudes. Trekking poles and gaiters will be useful. Most likely, there will be enough to wear: shorts and T-shirts (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).
At Marangu Gate, a car will be there to pick you up and take you back to your hotel or airport.
