CLIMBING ROUTES

There are six different routes for hiking or trekking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, each route varying in length, cost, scenery, difficulty, and success rates.

Marangu route

This route is also referred to as the “Coca Cola route,” is considered easier due to its well- maintained path with a steady, gradual incline (until the final camp) and hut accommodation. Requires minimum of 5 days, 1 extra day is recommended for acclimatization. However, despite its reputation, a significant number of trekkers still fail to reach the summit.

Characteristics of Marangu route.

  • Camping is not possible due to the presence of hut
  • It is relatively more budget-friendly, doesn’t require camping equipment or an additional porter, and can be completed in just 5 days.
  • Popular among hikers with less
  • The shortest hike duration all other routes have a minimum of at least 6 days’ mandatory
  • Least scenic as you ascend and descend on same

Machame route

Also known as the “Whiskey Route,” which is considered more challenging than the Marangu (Coca-Cola) route. Although it is tougher, it offers a higher success rate, particularly when completed over 7 days. The 7-day hike, unlike the 6-day version, includes a shorter day before the summit attempt, allowing more time to rest, acclimatize, and prepare for the final push.

Characteristics of Machame route.

  • Most popular
  • Tougher than Marangu
  • Steeper
  • Camping
  • Great views such as the barranco wall, the Shira plateau and the lava
  • Considered on of the scenic route, because starting from the west, the route circles Kibo to the south before descending via the Mweka route on the southeast.

Note: If you are confident in your ability to hike in difficult terrain for days in a row, if you like camping and nature, on a budget then Machame is the Kilimanjaro climb route for you.

Rongai route

The Rongai route is a great choice especially during the wet season, as it tends to be drier. It offers a gradual climb with well-spaced camps that allow for better acclimatization, ensuring plenty of time to rest before attempting the summit. This route provides a unique experience, allowing trekkers to see both sides of the mountain, approaching Kilimanjaro from the north and descending on the southeast via the Marangu route.

Characteristics of Rongai route.

  • A chance to spot
  • The Rongai Route requires a minimum of 5 days to complete, but it’s highly recommended to add an extra day or two for proper acclimatization.
  • Less
  • Camping
  • Easiest

Note; if you are looking for an easy hike and are keen on reaching the summit without having great considerations on the budget, this route is for you

Shira route

This route starts from the west and merges with the Machame route. It requires a minimum of 6 days, but adding an extra day to camp at Karanga Valley can improve your chances of reaching the summit. The extra day provides a shorter and easier day before the summit attempt, allowing for better rest and acclimatization.

Characteristics of Shira route.

  • More expensive as it will require added transport to the
  • Serious altitude the first
  • Not very

  • Requires minimum of 6 days, 1 extra day is recommended for

Lemosho route

Similar to the Shira route, the Lemosho route also approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and later merges with the Machame route. The first two days of the Lemosho route take you through a scenic and remote rainforest, offering great opportunities for wildlife sightings. Longest trek where it requires 7 to 8 days.

Characteristics of Lemosho route.

  • The longest

  • Steeper
  • Expensive route due to remoteness and added transport
  • Requires minimum of 7 days, 1 extra day is recommended for acclimatization

Note: This route is for people with hike experience or confident in their ability to hike a difficult terrain, camp out, wanting a superb wilderness experience and whom budget is not the ultimate consideration.

Umbwe route

This route joins with the Machame route near Barranco Camp on the second night, while other routes typically reach Barranco on the third or fourth night. The trail on the first day is quite steep, but it is manageable thanks to the tree roots, which act as natural steps.

Characteristics of Umbwe route.

OTHER ROUTES;

This is the longest route on Kilimanjaro, taking you across the mountain and providing almost 360 degrees of stunning views, including the peaceful and less-explored slopes.

Characteristics of the northern circuit route.

  • Longest route to the summit
  • Not very popular
  • Takes 9-10 days
  • Provides proper acclimitization
  • Beautiful scenery

Mweka route

A descent path used for descending the mountain after completing any route except the Marangu and Rongai routes, which both descend via the Marangu Route. It offers a direct route to the base of the mountain, with a single stop at Mweka Camp halfway down.

Kilema route

The Kilema route is the cycling route, also runs alongside the Marangu Route. It is primarily used as an access road for vehicles to deliver supplies to the Horombo Hut and to handle medical evacuations.

Western breach

This alternative route to the summit approaches Uhuru Peak from the west. It involves climbing on hands and feet at certain sections, making it both beautiful and challenging. While stunning, it is considered risky and unsafe, it was closed in 2006 following an accident that resulted in the death of three climbers, but it was reopened in 2007.

COST OF CLIMBING MT. KILIMANJARO.

The price for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is $340 per person per day. If an individual chooses a specific route, the total cost will be calculated by multiplying the number of days required for that route by the daily rate.

For example, if you choose the Marangu route, which takes 6 days to reach the summit, the total cost would be $340 (per person per day) x 6 days =$2040 per person for the Marangu route.

Please note that if the number of travellers increases, the overall cost will also increase accordingly, as the price is based on the number of participants.

Extra costs associated with the hike;

Tipping, after seeing the minimum wage & the breakdown of what you pay for it is now clearer that tipping is essential for the crew, while it is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.

Note: tips will be provided directly to the crew by the client & are not included in the hike price

Gear rental, if you are not fully equipped for the hike, you should expect to rent the gears.

Add on, certain equipment, like a private toilet, are not considered essential and will be provided for an additional fee. These add-ons may increase the overall cost of your hike, since it may require an extra porter to carry the private toilet.
